Internet Chats for Carey's Birthday A Big Success

Enthusiasm for Internet chats has reached new highs, as parties held by fans this weekend to celebrate the 28th birthday of Mariah Carey demonstrate.

HOBART (30 Mar 1998)- In terms of real time, the first party was held in Australia at Derek Summers' MariahOz site. The Australian party was first by virtue of it being just to the west of the International Dateline.

Upwards of twenty Australians were seen at the party through it's duration, and the hot topic was Ms Carey's recent concert tour of the country.

The traditional party at 3pm New York time (also known as Mariah Carey Time or MCT to Internet fans) was held on the Undernet chat network.

Channel #Mariah, the traditional Undernet channel for such parties, was alive with people from around the world for over eight hours. Estimates put the total number of visitors at forty, with sometimes twenty being present at a time.

Much imaginary food and beverage was consumed, and time was found to play all of the albums and EPs Ms Carey has ever released.

The #Mariah party was so popular that it eventually overflowed into another party being held on a more contemporary channel, #MariahFanWorld. There speeches, party games and computerized versions of Carey's songs were bounced around the world via the Internet Relay Chat system.

All of the parties were remarkably successful. See The Mariah Carey Page in this issue for more details.
