The Mariah Carey Page

Billboard's Fantasy Review

Carey and producer Dave Hall deftly re-create the magic of their 1994 megasmash, Dreamlover, on this contagious first single from her imminent fourth studio set. The two have cooked up a joyous pop/hip-hop love song that is seasoned with samples from the Tom Tom Club postdisco evergreen Genius of Love. Though the bassline is taut and in da tight pocket of jeep-driven top 40 trends, Carey has the room needed to flex her voice to playfully acrobatic effect. R&B and crossover programmers should take note of Sean "Puffy" Combs' remix, on which the song is stripped down to a raw groove and features a guest rap by Ol' Dirty Bastard. A club-oriented rerecording of the song was produced by Carey with club icon David Morales.

Forget Michael Jackson!

Sony's new favourite star is undoubtedly Mariah Carey. After the industrial-strength megaflop History from Michael Jackson on the Epic label, Sony is looking at further promoting Columbia's pop diva Mariah Carey. On the release week of the Fantasy single, Mariah was whipped into a publicity whirlwind, with live via satellite performances all over the world, most notably in the UK, Asia and Australia.

Every major music television channel in the world, beginning with MTV at their annual music awards, has featured the Queen of Sony in interviews and on special video presentations. Also this week, Mariah has featured in articles for many major music magazines, such as Billboard, and received a praiseful review of her Daydream album in the US edition of the world's most widely read magazine Time.

In the footsteps of Michael Jackson, Mariah is possibly going to appear in a US TV network special, in a set of many further television-related ventures connected to exposing the Daydream album.

Mariah's section at the Sony Worldwide Web site on the Internet is also under expansion. The site will include CD and single-sleeve pictures of the singer by famed photographer Steven Meisel; footage from the Fantasy video clip; biographical information; recent magazine and newspaper articles; and sound bites from Daydream.

Also, in a particularly exciting prospect for Internet users, Mariah will eventually be doing live on-line chats with her computer literate fans. A computer screen saver featuring portions of the Fantasy video is also being released. Dreamlover is also available.

Mariah To Tour

Look out! Mariah is ready to do the biggest live concert tour you've ever seen. A tour of Europe, Asia and Australia is being considered for early 1996. "There is a lot of excitement and anticipation for the project all over the world," Julie Borchard, VP at Columbia, says. "There are so many people [abroad] who are dying to have her over and see her perform."

The Golden Microphone

On the Daydream album, Mariah sings through a new type of microphone named after the swede Didrik DeGeer. The microphone is built in 1930's style, with only one active component, and is manufactured from copper. For the perfect sound, the hand-tooled copper is some 30-40 years old. The microphone is dubbed by experts as the best there is, and costing about US$10000, it ought to be! The microphone weighs in at 2.2 kg and is 27 x 8 cm.
