From The Archer Review, Issue 2: The Fantasy Edition (Mon 28 Aug 1995)
Mariah's new single, Fantasy, has hit radio stations in the US. The official radio release was scheduled for satellite dissemination on 30 August, but was put forward to 24 August because many radio stations had started playing poor-quality bootleg versions. One radio station, at overwhelming request, is playing the song every half-hour.
Worldwide release of the Fantasy single will take place on 12 September. Because of the long anticipation of the multitudes of US Mariah fans, the single is likely to debut at number one on the US Billboard charts, and remain there for several weeks. The single is a feel-good upbeat track which promises to outsell the highly successful debut track Dreamlover from Music Box.
The video for the Fantasy single has been directed by Mariah herself. The video marks Mariah's directing debut, but it is unlikely to be her last. As an added challenge for Mariah, Hurricane Felix was fast approaching the US east coast location when the video was being shot.
Excitement is welling up in the ranks of Mariah Carey fans, as the release date of her new album approaches. All details have now been finalized by Sony Music in the US, and Mariah's fifth album, titled Daydream, will be released worldwide on 3 October. The album will feature twelve tracks, including the projected Billboard number one hit Fantasy and a duet with Boys II Men.
An upcoming Archer Review will feature a picture of the Daydream cover. The cover is rumoured to have a picture of Mariah with straight hair, similar to the cover for the Fantasy single.
Apparently Fantasy is reminiscent of Dreamlover's Def Club Mix, with a touch of the style found in the Anytime You Need A Friend remixes. I personally find the intro to the song (the only part I have currently heard) reminiscent of Janet Jackson, and others have expressed this opinion, comparing it with Janet's latest: Runaway.
The album version and radio mix both feature a sample from the Tom-Tom Club song Genius of Love, which is apparently more prevalent in one of the more popular remixes. Another mix has a rap lyric performed by Wu-Tang Clan's Old Dirty Bastard.
The Bad Boy Mix is supposed to show a side of Mariah that has never before been seen, and apparently needs to be heard to be believed. Altogether, there are five mixes on the radio distribution single, and it is likely that these will all appear on the commercial release.
Mariah has been negotiating with Sony Music to establish her own record label to draw new music talent. Insiders say that Mariah is already working with potential acts, and it is unlikely that Sony would reject such a promising custom label.
