US Decline For Sony Music

The latest market share statistics for the US music industry show Sony at the bottom of the heap.

HOBART (12 Jun 1997)- Out of the six main label groups in the United States, Sony Music Entertainment came dead last. The group includes the Columbia and Epic labels.

Sony has it's fair share of other troubles in recent weeks, with the misfire of Michael Jackson's Blood On The Dance Floor remix album last week. After a less than promising debut at number 27 on the US charts, the album proceeded to sink to number 43 in the following week.

Sony has also been plagued by disease and death. One of their highly favoured artists, Bob Dylan, has had to cancel a tour due to a heart problem. And singer Jeff Buckley, also signed to the label, died tragically last week.

Mariah Carey And Husband Separate

Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola have announced a "trial separation" just a week short of their fourth anniversary.

HOBART (12 Jun 1997)- The singer-songwriter was married to the Sony Music Entertainment President on Saturday 5th June 1993.

The announcement of the separation was made by representatives of the couple just twenty-four hours after spokespersons for each had denied escalating tabloid reports of the break up. "This is a very private matter which neither party will discuss further," came the statement from joint publicists.

Reports suggest that Ms Carey has moved into a Manhattan apartment. Final mixing on her new album, due out in a few months, is currently underway.
