From The Archer Review, Issue 9: The Birthday Edition (Mon 30 Mar 1998)
The spirits of most Japanese, Taiwanese and Australian Mariah fans has never been higher, with Mariah making these countries the destinations of her longest tour so far.
The concert programme centred around tracks from Butterfly, but there were plenty of old classics in the repetoire, along with a few surprises.
Mariah visited Tokyo, Taipei, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and Melbourne to do ten out of eleven scheduled concerts in the region, before crossing the Pacific for her final show in Honolulu.
It was recently announced that Mariah is now divorced from her husband of five years, Tommy Mottola.
The couple agreed on a speedy and relatively painless end to their marriage, which was carried out on non-US soil.
The announcement comes after almost a year of separation, and 25 years after Mariah's own parents divorced in 1973.
The guest list for Mariah's 28th Birthday Party on #Mariah read like a who's who of the Internet fan community, as was pointed out by a newcomer to IRC.
Ken Sims was star of the show, but his mild manner caused him to be upstaged by many of the others competing for the spotlight.
Brittany "One Sweet Day" Conley delighted us with her beautiful speech and had the honour of cutting the cake.
Michelle Naumann celebrated her birthday on the channel, and was devoted enough to send multiple copies of the infamous Turkey Song which Mariah sang at a couple of her concerts. The song is a short country number, and is one of the many surprises Mariah delivered to concert-goers on her tour.
Other guests at the eight-hour marathon included the outspoken Agent M, the ever-mysterious DarkCalm, botmaster Crave and the elusive Dima. Guests came from places far and wide, including Australia, Russia, France, the UK and the US.
